On July 17, we will be joined by local historian Dan Roper as part of our Lunch & Learn series.
Dan Roper is the owner, editor and publisher of Georgia Backroads. He searches for the small story within the larger history, and has a longstanding connection with Rome and Berry College. He earned his Forestry and Law degrees from the University of Georgia and practiced law in Rome for 19 years, while also teaching at Berry College as an adjunct professor and in other capacities since 1993. His articles and photo essays have been featured in North Georgia Journal and Georgia Backroads magazines for many years.
Since 1986, Dan has lived in Armuchee, Georgia, just minutes away from Rome, and refers to Berry College as “Berry National Park”. Dan and his wife have found the campus to be the number one perk of living in Rome, with its seemingly endless acres of woodlands and mountains to explore. When Dan first heard about the Spires at Berry College, he was delighted at the idea of people having the opportunity to live amongst the beauty of the campus, whether already familiar with the area or not. “The people of Rome have special relationships with the college,” says Dan. “I imagine the demand for living space at The Spires will reflect this passion for Berry.”
In addition to sharing his passion for the area and its longstanding traditions, Dan’s talk will focus on the natural history of the Berry property. He will also focus on the history of people who lived in the area before it became a college campus.
