Berry College Announces Location for New Continuing Care Retirement Community

CCRC to be sited on one of the nation’s most scenic college campuses

ROME, GEORGIA (November 2, 2015) – Berry College has announced the site of the new Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) that will be built on undeveloped college land adjacent to the college’s nationally recognized main campus. The CCRC, opening in 2019, will overlook a pristine 88-acre lake, with unobstructed views of Lavender Mountain and within a five-minute drive of the region’s highly regarded medical centers.

The CCRC, which will be named next year, will feature 150 apartment homes and cottages and offer a full complement of healthcare and supportive services and amenities on the world-renowned 27,000-acre campus, the nation’s largest.

“The natural beauty, recreational opportunities, historic sites and exceptional health care make Rome an ideal area for retirees,” said Alexander Whitaker, Berry College chief of staff. “For years we have had requests from alumni and residents to create a community near campus. There is great excitement that we are able to do this on such a stunningly beautiful site, connected so closely to our main campus and to Rome.”

Residents will enjoy access to cultural and academic offerings as well as the natural wonders of Berry College: from lectures and sporting events, to the more than 60 miles of hiking, biking and running trails, to the campus’s famed wildlife—including bald eagles that frequent the lake. Lakeside fine dining and a host of recreational and fitness facilities unique to the CCRC will also be readily available, along with the security of lifelong health services and continuing healthcare, given the close proximity to the region’s top medical centers. Less than ten minutes from picturesque downtown Rome, Georgia, with its nationally recognized main street, the campus is also easily accessible by car from Atlanta, Birmingham, and Chattanooga.

“The relationship between the college and CCRC is wonderfully complementary, as it will allow different generations to enjoy and serve one another,” Briggs said. “And both the retirement community and Berry will be richer for it.”

Those interested in becoming residents can with a minimal deposit enroll on a priority list beginning in December. In late 2016 priority members can select their future residence with a fully-refundable 10- percent deposit and receive special savings and benefits.

“It’s our hope that the idyllic setting will foster a community atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, spiritual reflection, and warm fellowship,” added Briggs.
