If you’ve ever walked around the downtown area of Rome, Georgia or strolled through the campus of Berry College, you’ve probably experienced the feeling of inspiration. From the beautiful scenery and quaint shops filled with art, to the students working towards their dreams on campus—it’d be hard not to feel the shared sense of purpose.

That’s exactly where the idea for The Spires at Berry College—and the name of the continuing care retirement community—originated. The founder of the college, Martha Berry, set spires atop campus buildings to encourage students to look upward and be inspired by their aspirations. That spirit remains very much alive on campus today, and it’s already shared by future residents of The Spires at Berry College. It’s the very reason why Dick and Jean Tucker, early depositors of The Spires, have moved from California to a temporary apartment in Rome in anticipation of the community opening in 2020.

If you’ve never visited the town or if you are in the process of researching The Spires at Berry College, you may be wondering what has drawn so many people to the community. We asked a few of our depositors to share what inspired them to choose The Spires. Here is what they had to say:

Bob and Brenda Layfield shared, “We made the decision because of the direct connection with Berry College. We wanted to move while we were in good health and able to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities afforded by living in The Spires at Berry College.”

Linn and Teb Bowman agreed. Teb said, “We had evaluated our lives entering our mid-70s and decided that The Spires offered a reputation backed by Berry College that was impressive. We were inspired by the proximity to an academic community that we desired, and the nearness to retirement facilities that assist in the aging process.” Linn added, “We want to keep learning and to keep improving. We look at this as a place to have new experiences and to learn and improve ourselves.”

In addition to what others said, Mary Arney was immediately “drawn to the natural beauty of the Rome area and the mountainous landscape and waterfront view” she will have at The Spires. She is excited to involve herself in student life, and explore the possibility of a mentoring program or Bible study that she could participate in.

Dr. Dee Russell, also a depositor, shared, “I think that I value the continuum of care the most. Being able to move from one facility on campus to the next without extra costs or worry about finding another place to live is comforting. I am excited, of course, by the prospect of being on a college campus and all the people who will also be living there with us, but the large safety net that is cast by the continuum of care is greatly valuable to me.”

As a Continuing Care Retirement Community, The Spires at Berry College presents an opportunity for you to live independently in to a beautiful apartment home or cottage, with the peace of mind that your future health needs will be taken care of. The on-site Health Center offers Assisted Living, including a dedicated Memory Care unit, and Skilled Nursing–all set amid the natural beauty of the Berry College campus. Should the need for these services arise, care is provided at highly discounted rates compared to fees required for the general public to utilize these services. Residents of The Spires will receive priority access to care in our Health Center as well as access to the world-renowned medical centers of Rome, Georgia.

In addition, there are countless amenities and activities to take advantage of—and those are even more enjoyable with the knowledge that plans are in place for you if and when you need a higher level of care.

Once you visit Rome, you’ll without a doubt want to return. And as you can tell from some depositors, if you are from Rome, you never want to leave. The Spires at Berry College is a perfect opportunity to spend the next chapter of your life in a town that has inspired so many. In speaking with depositor Ted Fox, he summed it up perfectly by saying, “You just know when this is the right thing to do, and I can’t think of a better place to live.”
